Aron Baynes never even picked up a basketball until he was 16 years old. But within 2 years he was playing college ball in the US and headed for a professional career.
Such was his raw talent. The NBA teased, but he ultimately landed in Europe and battled to fit in as he struggled through long and lonely seasons in Lithuania and Germany.
But time spent with the Australian ‘Boomers’ national team reinforced his self-belief and he headed to Greece – his third country in three seasons – and transformed himself from wandering journeyman to hot prospect.
Suddenly big European & NBA clubs were interested – Aron ultimately signing with the San Antonio Spurs and now, in his second season, is playing a critical back-up big man role as they challenge for the NBA crown. It’s a classic underdog story, highlighting the power of determination and self-belief.
