This week Marngrook Footy show celebrates Indigenous Round with a special episode featuring AFL, CEO Andrew Demetriou, founder of the Long Walk and Essendon legend Michael Long and ARIA and Deadly Award winning musician Dan Sultan.
AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou has been instrumental in the development of Indigenous round and AFL football in Indigenous communities across the country over his 11 years at the helm. Andrew will be joining Grant Hansen, Gilbert McAdam, Chris Johnson, Wayne Carey, Shelley Ware and Leila Gurruwiwi this week on the panel to discuss its inception, importance and future.
Indigenous Round has been a significant part of the AFL season since it began in 2007. A key focus of the round is the Dreamtime at the ‘G’ game where the Richmond Tigers take on the Essendon Bombers on Saturday May 31, 7:30pm. This game is a chance for the AFL to recognise Indigenous culture and the proud athletes who’ve played such an important role, not just on the ground but also off it.
An integral part of Indigenous Round is the The Long Walk inspired by former Essendon player Michael Long, who walked to Canberra in 2004 to get the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people back on the national agenda. This year the Long Walk celebrates its 10th anniversary and the Marngrook team are thrilled to have Michael Long on the panel this week to share some of the achievements and milestones the Long Walk Trust charity have reached this past decade.
The Long Walk Trust work to improve and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, wellbeing and life opportunities by raising awareness through fundraising activities, events and educational programs nationally.
Also joining the panel this week is newly resigned Hawk Shaun Burgoyne. Burgoyne is a true Indigenous leader and star of the game who recently celebrated his 250th game in Round 6 a milestone achievement.
To close the show ARIA Award winner, Deadly Award winner, and musician of the moment Dan Sultan will be performing his singleKimberly Calling.
