Sally Sara, one of Australia’s most accomplished foreign correspondents, is returning to Africa for ABC News, based in Nairobi.

Sara was previously Africa correspondent from 2000-2005 and South Asia correspondent based in Delhi from 2008-2010.

Sara reported from the frontline in Afghanistan as well as on the lives of its civilians. She has also travelled widely across Australia for Landline and more recently clocked up many more kilometres working for Foreign Correspondent, including recently reporting from Istanbul on the aftermath of the attempted coup in Turkey.

An award-winning journalist, in 2011 she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia. Her book on women in Africa, Gogo Mama, was published in 2006.

Deputy Director of ABC News Craig McMurtrie said:

“Whatever the working environment she faces, Sally has demonstrated time and time again a formidable capacity to find the right person and story that cuts to the heart of an issue.”

Sara will take up the posting next year, replacing Martin Cuddihy, who has completed his three-year posting.
