The Seven Network and Fox Footy will broadcast an AFL game on Good Friday for the first time in 2017.

The Round 4 clash on April 14, will see North Melbourne host the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium. The game will commence at 4.20pm allowing Seven to continue its tradition of broadcasting the Royal Children’s Telethon Gala concert immediately after the game.

As part of the decision to hold a Good Friday match, the AFL has entered into discussions with Seven, Fox Footy, and the organisers of the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal regarding how the game could add awareness and momentum to the key fundraising event.

Bob Ansett, one of the men responsible for North’s initial push, says the time is perfect for the AFL to have announced the game.

“I think it’s terrific, I’d be surprised if Etihad Stadium wasn’t packed to the rafters. It’s taken a while to come to fruition but it was our idea and it’s great to see we’ve been recognised as pioneers yet again.”

The former North president said he discussed the possibility of playing on the day back in the late 80s

“Back then there was a lot of opposition but now, things have changed a great deal and there’s widespread acceptance that people can practice their religious beliefs, but also attend a football game. Other codes have shown that it can be done in a respectful manner, and they’ve trumped the AFL in that regard.”
“The time is definitely right, now.”

The full fixture for the 2017 AFL season to be released later this week.
