Streaming Guide October 7-13
Jane the Virgin: Season 2 (Netflix)
This delightful show was going to be next week’s top pick, but Netflix released it ahead of schedule so that #Rogelifans can find out if Mateo is okay after his kidnapping by crime lord Sin Rostro. Who is Mateo? What is a #Rogelifan? If you don’t know, it’s best to start from the beginning of this comedy about a Latina family living in Florida that embraces the ridiculous and honours its telenovela roots. Then you can follow @RogelioDeLaVega on Twitter and argue about whether Jane should be with Michael or Rafael (the correct answer is Michael) before the start of season 3.
13th (Netflix, October 7)
This Netflix Original Documentary by Ava DuVernay (Selma, Queen Sugar) opened the New York Film Festival last week. The title refers to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which reads “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.” The progression from that second qualifying clause to the horrors of mass criminalisation and the sprawling American prison industry is laid out by DuVernay with bracing lucidity. With a potent mixture of archival footage and testimony from a dazzling array of activists, politicians, historians, and formerly incarcerated men and women, DuVernay creates a work of grand historical synthesis.
The Flash: Season 2 (Stan, October 7)
Following the defeat of Barry’s arch-nemesis Eobard Thawne, Team Flash must turn their attention to the singularity left swirling high above Central City consuming everything in its path. While the Flash is recognised as the hero of Central City, the singularity event has brought over a villain from a parallel universe. In order to defeat the villain, Barry will need to travel to Earth 2 to learn more about his powers.
Hap and Leonard: Season 1 (Presto, October 10)
Hap and Leonard stars Michael Kenneth Williams (The Wire, Boardwalk Empire) and James Purefoy (Rome, The Following) as the characters created by novelist Joe R. Lansdale in this adaptation of his novels of the same name. These two men work together as private investigators for in the fictional town of La Borde, East Texas.
Locke (Stan, October 12)
This 2013 film takes place over two hours, as Ivan Locke (Tom Hardy) drives from Birmingham to London in order to be with his ex-lover Bethan (Olivia Colman), who has gone into premature labour with his child. Over the course of the drive, Locke makes and receives 36 phone calls with his boss and colleague as he leaves work for the day, his wife Katrina and with Bethan, as well as imaginary conversations with his father, who he envisions as a passenger in his car.
