I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead (Netflix, August 19)
Netflix’s newest documentary follows electronic music DJ Steve Aoki. From producers Matthew Weaver (Rock of Ages), Matt Colon, Happy Weaver and David Gelb (Chef’s Table, Jiro Dreams of Sushi), I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead is filmed in the lead up to Aoki’s biggest show, and examines the influence of his father, wrestler Rocky Aoki.
The Newsroom: Seasons 1-3 (Presto, August 19)
Created by Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, The Social Network, Moneyball), The Newsroom is a behind the scenes look at the people who make a nightly cable news program. After an outburst at a university, news anchor Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) returns to work to learn that his new executive producer (Emily Mortimer) is someone from his past. This show follows Will and his team (including a fantastic performance by Olivia Munn as economic reporter Sloan Sabbath) in their mission to tell the news well in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles, not to mention their own personal entanglements.
Gay for Play Game Show: Season 1; RuPaul’s Drag Race: Seasons 2-4,7 (Stan, August 23)
Next Tuesday Stan is dropping a cornucopia of shows hosted by RuPaul, the world’s most famous drag queen. Gay for Play is a comedic extravaganza where a panel of celebrities help contestants answer pop culture questions to win cash and prizes. Special guests include Carson Kressley, Todrick Hall, and Ross Matthew. In RuPaul’s drag race, amateur drag queens compete to become America’s next drag superstar, with RuPaul acting as host, mentor and inspiration.
Fear the Walking Dead: Season 1 (Presto, August 24)
A prequel to the hit show The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead is a gritty drama that explores the onset of the undead apocalypse through the lens of a fractured family. Set in a city where people come to escape, shield secrets, and bury their pasts, a mysterious outbreak begins to threaten their society. A forced evolution, a necessary survival of the fittest takes hold, and our dysfunctional family must either reinvent themselves or embrace their darker histories.
The Returned: Season 2 (Stan, August 25)
After a long wait, The Returned is back with more of the chilling, atmospheric, and masterful storytelling that made the first season a success. Set six months after the end of season one, we catch up with the characters from the first season and meet some more people from this small French town who have returned from the dead.
