It’s hardly a surprise, but the Seven Network has today officially confirmed The X Factor will not return in 2017.
The axing of The X Factor means that The Voice will now be the only singing contest on the box in 2017.
Seven Head of Programming Angus Ross confirmed the news telling the TV Tonight website:
“Obviously the back half of the year wasn’t as successful as the front half of the year for us. We walk away with Secret Daughter as a win from the back half, but there was a bit of disappointment with some of the other shows.”
The show was a costly ratings disaster for Seven in 2016, combined with Zumbo’s Just Desserts, the network failed to capitalise on an expected Olympics’ audience bump and finished the year regularly beaten by Nine’s The Block, and Ten’s popular series Australian Survivor and The Bachelor.
Zumbo’s Just Desserts, The X Factor, House Rules and The Big Music Quiz dominated voting in the recent DeciderTV ‘Show I Never Want To See Again’ award. A clear sign the network needs to refresh its primetime schedule.
