Highlights

Black Mirror: Season 4 (Netflix, December 29)

The anthology series that taps into our collective unease with the modern world with six new stories, each a sharp, suspenseful tale exploring themes of contemporary techno-paranoia leading to an unforgettable – and sometimes an unsettling – conclusion. The Star Trek-inspired episode “USS Callister” starring Jesse Plemons (Friday Night Lights, Fargo) and Cristin Milioti (How I Met Your Mother, Fargo) is a timely examination of male entitlement and the “nice guy” trope. Other episodes include artificial intelligence designed to find your soulmate, a robot-dog assassin, and an overprotective mother who uses an implant to track her daughter’s movements.

Romper Stomper (Stan, January 1)

This six-part miniseries is a continuation of Geoffrey Wright’s 1992 film, picking up on its themes and updating them to reflect the current political climate. We follow a new generation of the activist Right, their Anti-Fascist counterparts and three young Lebanese Muslims caught between the conflict. Romper Stomper brings the battle of opposing views into the modern-day context where the action has shifted from swastikas to ‘patriotism’ and the fight for the Southern Cross. This Stan Original Series stars Lachy Hulme (Howzat! Kerry Packer’s War), David Wenham (SeaChange), Sophie Lowe (The Beautiful Lie) and Toby Wallace (Boys in the Trees), with Dan Wyllie (Gallipoli) and Jacqueline McKenzie (The Water Diviner) reprising their roles from the original film.

The X-Files: Season 11, Episode 1 (Foxtel Now, January 4)

When The X-Files returned with a tenth season in 2016, it was met with mixed reviews. The previews for the new season are more promising, praising the show’s renewed relevance. The premiere is a continuation of the tenth season finale, as Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) learn that they aren’t the only people searching for their long-lost son, William.
