Julia Zemiro travels around Australia to take some of her favourite people down memory lane. Joining her on the road this week is colourful media heavyweight, Lee Lin Chin.
SBS newsreader and gold Logie nominee Lee Lin Chin grew up in Singapore. On a rare visit home she meets Julia at a vibrant ‘wet’ market, one of the bustling produce markets where the locals start their day. Lee Lin tells Julia about piling into a Fiat Bambino with her mum, dad and 6 siblings and then waiting in the locked car in 32 degree heat while her parents shopped inside.
Lee Lin describes her unusual upbringing, involving her larger-than-life parents. Her father was an Arthur Daley figure and her mother was very glamorous but never worked a day in her life and didn’t cook or clean. Lee Lin explains that none of the landmarks of her childhood remain standing. Not only has the family terrace house gone in Singapore’s drive to modernize, but the entire neighbourhood was long ago made anew.
