The lavish and acclaimed 17th century drama returns to SBS for a much-anticipated second season on 27 July. Set in the royal court of Louis XIV, the 10-part season depicts the decadent and turbulent early reign of the Sun King.

King Louis XIV sees the dream of his grand Versailles palace crumbling before his eyes. With phase one of the palace complete, most of France’s eminent lords and ladies now live under the Sun King’s roof, locked in a constant battle for supremacy.
Drugs, gambling and alcohol are rampant, as nobles begin to poison each other in order to get closer to the king and climb the social ladder. Surrounded by darkness and depravity, he loses his sense of purpose – but can he discover the path back to light and redemption to save his vision of Versailles?

Marshall Heald, SBS Director of Television and Online Content, said: “SBS is excited to bring this epic cinematic drama to Australian audiences for a second season. Filmed on location at the Chateau de Versailles in Paris, Versailles gives us a glimpse of the luxurious lifestyle of the last French monarchs.”

The series stars George Blagden (King Louis XIV), Alexander Vlahos (Philippe d'Orléans), Elisa Lasowski (Queen Marie-Therese), Anna Brewster (Madame de Montespan), Tygh Runyan (Fabien), Evan Williams (Chevalier) and Stuart Bowman (Botnemps).

New additions to the second season include Italian-Australian Emmy Award-winning actress Greta Scacchi (War & Peace, Looking for Alibrandi) and Harry Hadden-Paton (Downton Abbey).

Historical and fictional characters, flamboyant nobles, beautiful courtesans and humble servants guide us through this intoxicating world of secrets, betrayals, love and war. This is Versailles in all its brutal glory.
