Highlights

A Little Help with Carol Burnett (Netflix, May 4)

The world of streaming offers a variety of shows I’d never even considered as possibilities, including Netflix’s show with legend of stage and screen Carol Burnett. In this funny and endearing series, Carol will be joined by a group of the most honest and unfiltered people in the world – a gaggle of straight-talking, entertaining 5-9-year-old children. These opinionated experts weigh in on a variety of relatable and humorous dilemmas brought in by adults. Each episode will feature a celebrity contributor brave enough to bring their own dilemma for the children to comment on in front of a live audience.

Dear White People: Volume 2 (Netflix, May 4)

Dear White People was one of the best shows of 2017, and people didn’t talk about it enough. With biting narration from Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul), Dear White People follows students of colour at the fictional Winchester University as they try to navigate race issues in a “post-racial” America. In Volume 2, romantic dilemmas, a social media troll and big changes at Armstrong-Parker House push Sam (Logan Browning), Lionel (DeRon Horton) and their friends to breaking point.

Picnic at Hanging Rock (Foxtel Now, May 6)

For the first time ever, Foxtel will make every episode of Picnic at Hanging Rock available to stream or watch On Demand at the same time as screening a new episode each Sunday for six weeks. A re-imagining of Joan Lindsey’s iconic novel, this miniseries stars acclaimed actress Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones, The Tudors) and Yael Stone (Orange Is the New Black, Deep Water), as well as Australian rising stars Lily Sullivan, Samara Weaving, Madeleine Madden and Ruby Rees.

Vida: Season 1, Episode 1 (Stan, May 7)

Stan has two new shows premiering on Monday. They’re both good, but this one is my favourite. Emma (Mishel Prada) and Lyn (Marissa Barrera) are Mexican-American sisters from the East side of Los Angeles who haven’t seen each other, or their mother, in years. Circumstances force them to return to their old neighbourhood, where they are confronted by the past and surprising truth about their mother’s identity.

Sweetbitter: Season 1, Episode 1 (Stan, May 7)

Based on the best-selling novel by Stephanie Danler, Sweetbitter tells the story of Tess (Ella Purnell), a 22-year-old who moves to New York City from Ohio without warning to pursue a new life. She quickly becomes intoxicated by the chaotic, adrenalised world behind the scenes of a top Manhattan restaurant: tasting expensive wine, exploring dive bars and learning who she can trust.
