Highlights

Queer Eye: Season 2 (Netflix, June 15)

The first season of Queer Eye was a hit, and we’ve already got a second. You may have seen all the footage of the Fab Five – Antoni Porowski, Karamo Brown, Tan France, Bobby Berk and Jonathan Van Ness – in Sydney last week. I didn’t get to meet them and I’m jealous of everyone who did. At least we have this new season, and it’s phenomenal. This new iteration of Queer Eye has evolved from the original show, and the Fab Five are now taking on female and transgender clients. They discuss difficult issues with their clients and are willing to learn along the way, proving that there’s more that unites us than divides us.

Counterpart: Season 1 (SBS On Demand, June 16)

The World Cup starts this weekend, and for those of us who aren’t really interested, SBS is giving us a new spy drama! Counterpart premieres at 10:30 on SBS and SBS On Demand after Australia’s first World Cup match (I just saw that it’s against France, that doesn’t bode well), with the whole season dropping SBS On Demand afterwards. Howard Silk (Oscar winner J.K. Simmons, Whiplash) is an office drone at a Berlin-based U.N. Agency. He has no idea what the agency does, but he learns when he meets his counterpart from another world, which the result of a Cold War experiment gone wrong. This other man is Howard Silk, but he’s different, and both of them must work together to keep the peace between their worlds.

Claws: Season 2, Episode 2 (Stan, June 18)

The girls of the Nail Artisan Salon (Niecy Nash, Carrie Preston and Judy Reyes) are back, which can only mean one thing! More gangsters, more guns and more manicures! Season two of this black comedy sees our heroes take on the Russian mafia – including Run Lola Run star Franka Potente – at their own game

Hannah Gadsby: Nanette (Netflix, June 19)

Hannah Gadsby’s final stand-up show, which won the Barry Award for Best Show at the 2017 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and joint winner of the Comedy Award at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe, is now available as a special on Netflix. Nanette is an hour in which Hannah tells the audience her story, which is funny, heartbreaking, angry and a call to arms for everyone to simply be better. In the first third of this show I was writing down my favourite lines (the one about bald babies is my favourite) and by the end I was in tears. Even though Hannah’s decided to leave comedy, her story and her voice won’t be forgotten.

The Americans: Season 6, Episode 10 – Finale (Foxtel Now, June 20)

I’ve fallen behind on a lot of television over the past couple of months, and my greatest regret is falling behind on The Americans, one of the best shows of the past few years. The Americans is a show about a marriage disguised as a spy show, which is fitting given all the fantastic wigs we’ve seen over six seasons. This is the series finale of The Americans, and we’ll learn the fates of Soviet spies Elizabeth (Keri Russell), Phillip (Matthew Rhys), their daughter Paige (Holly Taylor) and their FBI Agent neighbour – yes, really – Stan (Noah Emmerich). Elizabeth and Phillip’s son Henry (Keidrich Sellati) has been blissfully unaware of his parents’ identities as spies, and all we can hope for is that he makes it out okay.

Killing Eve: Season 1 (ABC iView, Available Now)

This third spy drama dropped two weeks ago, but I didn’t learn about it until after the fact, and you should watch it, it’s really very good. Based on the Villanelle novels by Luke Jennings, Killing Eve was adapted for television by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag). Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh, Grey’s Anatomy), a desk officer for MI-5 notices a pattern in recent assassinations throughout Europe, which she correctly deduces are committed by a woman (Jodie Comer, The White Princess). Enjoy the chase that ensues, as Eve and Villanelle circle the other, trying to take them out.
