Highlights

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee: New 2018: Freshly Brewed (Netflix, July 6)

After nine successful seasons on Crackle (there are so many streaming services in the US) Jerry Seinfeld has taken his hit webseries to Netflix. In this 2018 season he rides with twelve famous comedians, including Jerry Lewis, Ellen DeGeneres and Dave Chappelle.

Bend It Like Beckham (Stan, July 7)

It’s the sports movie for people who don’t like sports, and the perfect way to pretend you care about the World Cup. One of my favourite films when I was younger, Bend It Like Beckham follows Jess Bhamra (Parminder Nagra), the daughter of Indian immigrants who just wants to play football with her new friend Jules (Keira Knightley), against her family’s wishes. A beautiful story of female friendship (let’s just forget the love triangle), Bend It Like Beckham is a story about the expectations on children of immigrants, addressing issues of gender, race and sexuality in the U.K.

Sharp Objects: Episode 1 (Foxtel Now, July 9)

Adapted from bestselling author Gillian Flynn’s (Gone Girl) first novel, Sharp Objects follows reporter Camille (Amy Adams, who for some reason doesn’t have an Oscar) as she returns home to her small town in Missouri on assignment from her newspaper in Chicago. Investigating the murder and disappearance of two young girls, Camille must confront her past, including her relationship with her mother Adora (Patricia Clarkson) and meet her new younger sister Amma (Eliza Scanlen) in this psychological thriller.

Brother Vs Brother: Season 5, Episode 3 (Foxtel Now, July 9)

There are some great lifestyle shows for people who don’t want to watch Southern Gothic family dramas. Brother Vs Brother pits Jonathan and Drew Scott – better known as the Property Brothers – against each other. They are assigned similar size houses at the beginning of the season and guide their teams through renovations. At the end of the season, the house with the highest resale value wins.

Hyori’s Bed and Breakfast: Season 2 (Netflix, July 12)

Are you waiting for more episodes of Terrace House? There will be more at the end of the month! In the meantime, enjoy Hyori’s Bed and Breakfast, a show about K-Pop star Lee Hyori and her husband Lee Sang-soon as they decide to convert their home on Jeju Island into a Bed and Breakfast.

Get Shorty: Season 1 (Stan, July 12)

Chris O’Dowd (The I.T. Crowd, Bridesmaids) and Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond, The Big Sick) headline this hilarious remake of Barry Sonnenfeld’s classic crime comedy about a hitman who decides to head out on a new career path as a film producer. The second season will premiere on Stan August 13, the same day as the United States.
