
The premiere of Seven’s highly anticipated mini-series, INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, dominated a competitive night of television yesterday with a combined audience of 2.881 million viewers (1.974 Metro), more than double its nearest competitor.
The television event capped off a winning night for Seven with the line-up of My Kitchen Rules, the return of Sunday Night and Never Tear Us Apart delivering the network a 37.6% Metro share.
Seven’s Director of Network Production, Brad Lyons, said: “We are rapt that good local production got the audience it deserved. We couldn’t be prouder.”
Seven’s Director of Network Programming, Angus Ross, said: “It’s all about planning, planning and planning. We put our stake in the ground with INXS for Sunday some time ago as we were confident that Shine and Seven Productions had delivered the TV drama event of 2014. Seven’s 2014 Australian Open coverage up six per cent on 2013 as the epic Federer-Murray clash peaks at 2.63 million viewers and almost triples the metro audience for Ten’s T20 Big Bash League.
Roger Federer’s stunning four-set victory over Andy Murray attracted huge audiences on Seven as the 2014 Australian Open surges towards a conclusion with world number one Rafael Nadal also prevailing in a dramatic afternoon clash.
The Federer-Murray match averaged 1.81million combined viewers, including regional areas, with a metro average of 1.37m. The combined peak hit 2.63m.
By comparison, the first session of Ten’s coverage of the T20 Big Bash League averaged just 432,000 viewers in the 5 City Metro market.
With the entire night session of the tennis averaging 1.279m metro viewers, the result powered Seven to a massive 38.3 per cent network share, ahead of Nine with 24.8 per cent and Ten with 16.7 per cent.
The broadcast has now reached more than 12 million Australians over the first 10 days of the tournament – with the progressive audience for all telecasts on Channel 7 and 7TWO now up six per cent on 2013.
Yesterday’s coverage also featured huge audiences for Rafael Nadal who overcame gallant Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in four tight sets. Starting at 3pm, the match averaged a combined 830,000 viewers, and peaked at 1.37m.
Tonight ‘The Stanimal’ Stanislas Wawrinka takes on Czech Tomas Berdych for a spot in the Australian Open men’s final LIVE from 7pm AEDT.
Australians applauded with a combined peak audience of 2.16 million as 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer advanced to the quarter finals over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
In the five-city metro markets a peak audience of 1.42 million tuned in to the Federer-Tsonga three-set match, with an average audience of 1.14 million, helping Seven win the night with a 33.1 share.
During the afternoon a combined peak audience of 1.45 million saw the world no.1 Rafael Nadal defeat Japan’sKei Nishikori, with the match averaging 535,000 in the five-city metro.
Seven’s broadcast of the Australian Open has now reached 11.5 million combined viewers and 7.5million five city metro.
