SBS secures broadcast rights for EURO 2016 Football Tournament | @sbs

SportKevin Perry

The biggest names in European Football will head to your screens this June with confirmation that SBS has secured the free-to-air rights to UEFA Euro 2016

The coverage for Euro 2016 will see 8 live matches from the knockout stage, including the final on SBS and SBS HD, with a daily highlights show at 5.30pm on SBS 2.

Pay-TV and Digital rights for the tournament are still in the final stages of negotiations with an announcement expected shortly. This website understands BeIn Sports is the frontrunner to secure all remaining rights to the tournament.

The announcement comes just a week after SBS announced a deal with Optus that allows the government broadcaster to show one Saturday night EPL game per week.

The 2016 edition of the European Football championships is anticipated to be the biggest yet, with 24 teams competing across France for the Henri Delauney Trophy. Spain enter the tournament as the two time reigning champions, but will face a huge battle against World Champion Germany, a revitalised England and the host nation themselves.

SBS Director of Sport, Ken Shipp said: SBS is pleased to have obtained the exclusive free-to-air rights for the UEFA Euro 2016.

“We’re incredibly passionate and proud about our football heritage. SBS has been in the football business for over 30 years and we believe that football is a sport that truly reflects our unique Charter by connecting Australia’s diverse communities.”

SBS’s coverage of the UEFA Euro 2016 will commence June 11, all on SBS and SBS HD, with daily news and video highlights on sbs.com.au/theworldgame.
