The ABC has confirmed Lateline will return on Monday, 6 February, but in surprise move the show will have a new presenting team

Jeremy Fernandez will host the program from Monday to Thursday with political correspondent David Lipson and senior reporter Matt Wordsworth sharing presenting duties on Friday nights.

The change is due to regular presenters Tony Jones and Emma Alberici both taking long service leave.

Emma Alberici will return to the show on May 1. However Tony Jones is taking what the ABC describes as “extended leave” from the program for the entire year while he works on writing a book. Jones will continue to host Q&A on Monday evenings.

Journalist Jeremy Fernandez joined the ABC in 2000 and is a regular news presenter on ABC TV and ABC News 24. In his career he has worked as a journalist and producer in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and London. He will continue to present the ABC TV NSW 7pm News on Friday and Saturday nights.

David Lipson joined the ABC in 2015 as a presenter and political correspondent on Lateline. He previously worked for Sky News, including as a federal political reporter and as a US correspondent.

Lateline can be seen every weeknight on ABC News 24 at 9.30pm (AEDT) and on ABC TV at 10.30pm
