“Julia was my loyal deputy. And I didn’t believe she would do that. Until that point.” – Kevin Rudd
Sarah Ferguson’s revealing account of Labor’s leadership during the Rudd/Gillard years will air from Tuesday 9 June at 8.30pm on ABC.
Called The Killing Season – the last week of Parliament before the winter and summer break, the most dangerous time for a vulnerable leader – the series is an enthralling account of one of the most turbulent periods of Australian political history.
It features frank interviews with former Prime Ministers Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard, as well as a comprehensive cast of the main players of the time.

“I always had this long shadow from the way in which I became Prime Minister and active steps were taken basically every day of my Prime Ministership to have that shadow become darker and darker and not lighter and lighter.” – Julia Gillard
Series Producer/Director Deborah Masters said: “This series is a real life political thriller, a riveting watch – forensic research, strong writing, beautifully realised filmmaking – audiences are taken inside one of the most explosive political stories of our time.”
Writer/Presenter Sarah Ferguson added: “The Killing Season offers the thrill and intrigue of the best political dramas, with the same compelling themes – loyalty, ambition and betrayal. The candour of both Rudd and Gillard is remarkable and sometimes shocking.”
The three-part series coincides with the fifth anniversary of Rudd’s removal as Prime Minister, and second anniversary of his reinstatement.
An ABC News production, The Killing Season is executive produced by Sue Spencer.
