Although the movie was released in 2018, five years after the first film of the franchise, it is actually the oldest in the timeline. It’s set in Romania in 1952. The movie delves into the lore of the demon Valak (played by Bonnie Aarons), who stalks the remote monastery.

Taissa Farmiga and Demián Bichir, star as a Roman Catholic nun and a priest, respectively. The demon, although popularly called “The Nun” by fans, first appeared in The Conjuring 2 and briefly appeared in Annabelle Comes Home.

2. Annabelle: Creation:

This is a sequel that just like The Nun, dives into the lore of the spookiest artifact from the Ed and Lorraine Warren’s cursed collection. Annabelle is a haunted doll that made its debut in the original Conjuring movie. but based on its creepy smile and real-life history, it left the loyal fans to crave for more haunting experiences, ultimately forcing the franchise to release the sequel featuring the doll as the main character.

The movie, second on the list, is set in California, where it follows a doll maker and his wife who open their home to six orphaned girls and a nun after the death of their own daughter Annabelle. However, events take a weird turn when an ancient evil is released, and the girls are forced to fight for their survival.

3. The Nun II:

The Nun II

The Nun II highlights some more details about the demon Valak’s story. The story begins four years after Sister Irene’s encounter with the demon. Sister Irene now serves in a convent in Italy. Not knowing what the future holds, she is suddenly taken aback by a series of horrific deaths across Europe. Attributed to the demon Valak, the cardinal sends Sister Irene to Tarascon with Sister Debra (played by Storm Reid) to uncover the mystery.

4. Annabelle:

Annabelle was the first spin-off film released by the franchise, following the success of Annabelle Creation. It is the first of the trilogy to focus on Annabelle, the creepy doll kept in the Ed and Lorraine Museum. This real-life story takes place in 1967, in Southern California, 12 years after the doll was first purchased by John Form, played by Ward Horton.

He buys the doll as a gift for his expectant wife, Mia Form (played by Annabelle Wallis). Once the doll is in their house, they realize there’s something sinister under the porcelain exterior that’s going make their life a hell.

5. The Conjuring:

It was the first film to be released in cinemas, but in chronological order, it’s the fifth movie of the franchise. The story depicted in the movie is based on real-life events. This particular aspect makes it unique.

The characters, Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, were a real-life ghost/ paranormal investigator couple who investigated several supernatural cases in their careers. The movie focuses on their investigation of the Perron Family of Rhode Island, in 1971. The movie was directed by James Wan. It was the third blockbuster horror movie he was at the helm of. His other masterpieces include Saw Movies and Insidious.

7. The Curse of La Llorona:

The Curse of La Llorona

La Llorna, although set in the Conjuring Universe, is barely connected with the original universe apart from Tony Amendola’s Father Perez from Annabelle. It is more like a standalone film in the Conjuring movies in order. The story uses Latin American folklore of La Llorna, the spirit of a vengeful ghost that roams near bodies of water and drowns children.

The plot focuses on Anna (played by Linda Cardellini), a mother and a Los Angeles caseworker who has to fend off an evil spirit that wants to drown her children.

Following the massive popularity of the original movie, the writers had to bring back supernatural sleuths to solve another case. This time, the movie is set in 1977. The Warrens must travel to the London borough of Enfield to investigate the paranormal activities affecting the Hodgeson family, who were busy playing with an Ouija board. This was the original film that introduced The Nun, a the spine-chilling character to the Universe.

The last Conjuring franchise movie in order is The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. The story takes place in the 80s and revolves around another real-life event, the Arne Cheyenne Johnson trial. It was among the most popular trials of the era, as it was the first-ever court case in which the defense wanted to prove innocence based on the claim of demonic possession. The Warrens are drawn into the case to help with the investigation. However, they soon find out that they have been forced to get involved in a more vicious and  sinister game than they had expected.
