Streaming Guide October 6 – October 12
WHITE FAMOUS: Series Premiere (Stan, Available Now)
Stan is giving its subscribers an exclusive sneak peek at the first full episode of WHITE FAMOUS, the comedy based on the personal experiences of Oscar winner Jamie Foxx. Jay Pharoah (Saturday Night Live) plays Floyd Mooney, a young African American comedian whose star is on the rise. But the path to stardom is a minefield that Floyd must navigate to maintain his credibility while becoming “white famous”. Character actor Stephen Tobolowsky (The Primary Instinct) guest stars in the pilot, which was directed by Tim Story (Barbershop, Ride Along, Think Like A Man). New episodes will be available the same day as the US beginning October 16.
Jane the Virgin: Season 3 (Netflix, Available Now)
The whole point of this guide is to let people know what’s new, and sometimes I don’t get all the information ahead of time. The third season of Jane the Virgin (a personal favourite) dropped earlier this week, and a lot is happening (as is usual with this show). When we saw Jane (Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez) at the end of season two, she had just married Michael (Brett Dier, #TeamMichael), and everything was great. But their wedding night took a turn when Michael was shot. Jane the Virgin continues to be a wonderful whirlwind in its third season. If you’d like to talk to me about it, I’m on Twitter @forthejokes. Rogelio De La Vega (played delightfully by Jaime Camil) can be found @RogelioDeLaVega.
I Am Not Madame Bovary (Stan, October 8)
Taking home accolades galore at the Asian Film Festival, I Am Not Madame Bovary stars Bingbing Fan (X-Men: Days of Future Past) as a woman who takes on the Chinese legal system after her ex-husband swindles her.
Here Come the Habibs!: Season 1 (Stan, October 11)
They’ve just won the lottery, now Lebanese-Australian family the Habibs are moving from the ‘burbs into Australia’s richest suburb. But to their new neighbours, this means war! The smash-hit fish-out-of-water story brings a fresh comic perspective to multicultural Australia.
Riverdale: Season 2 Premiere; Dynasty: Series Premiere (Netflix, October 12)
Riverdale’s back for season two, and will hopefully resolve at least a few of those cliffhangers. Who shot Fred Andrews (Luke Perry)? Has Jughead (Cole Sprouse) joined the South-Side Serpents? What’s going on with Cheryl (Madelaine Peitsch)? To be fair, that’s always a question worth asking, but it’s important to know what’s going on in Riverdale. Joining Riverdale is The CW’s Dynasty reboot, which I’m hoping will be just as ridiculous.
